A Grand Panorama of Hakata Bay and the Genkai Sea Seen from the Island Summit
About this spot
An observation park at the mountaintop of Shikajima, offering the island's most spectacular scenic views with sweeping vistas of Hakata Bay and the Genkai Sea. Below, the Umino-Nakamichi sandbar stretches thinly, and beyond it, Fukuoka's cityscape spreads as though floating on the sea. On clear days, you can see across to Noko Island and the Itoshima area. Ships passing to and fro, and the glimmering sea—views that make you want to linger. At sunset, the western sea begins to glow softly, creating moments that photography enthusiasts will cherish. Despite the ease of driving up, a 360-degree panorama awaits. Be sure to capture a family photo at this island summit.
Tips
The road up to the observation area is narrow with many curves, so be mindful of oncoming traffic and drive slowly. The summit often experiences strong sea breezes, so bring something to wear for comfort. Don't get so absorbed in the view that you forget about the scheduled visit to Shikaiumi Shrine.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 30 minutes. When the sun begins to set in the west, the sea surface glows golden.
