The Head Shrine of the Sea Deity, Where Stone Steps Lead to Sea Views

An ancient shrine dedicated to Watatsumi-no-kami, the three deities of the sea, and said to be the head shrine of all Watatsumi shrines throughout Japan. Revered since ancient times as the "head shrine of the sea deity," it is known for its association with the Azumi clan, who led the maritime peoples. Before paying respects, it is customary to purify yourself with "O-Shioi," blessed sand placed within the shrine grounds. Beyond the stone steps, the shrine precincts house the "Shika-no-tsuno-do" (Deer Antler Hall), where many donated deer antlers are stored. From the sacred vantage point, you can glimpse the shimmering sea through the trees. This place of prayer, which has long watched over the entrance to Hakata Bay, is the perfect place to conclude a day surrounded by sea, joining your hands in quiet gratitude.

Tips

It is customary to purify yourself with the blessed sand "O-Shioi" placed near the torii gate before paying respects. Stone steps are involved, so wear comfortable walking shoes. If you wish to receive talismans or a stamp in your pilgrimage book, visit during daylight hours when the shrine office is open.
