A Leisurely Stroll Along a Tree-Lined Path of One Million Black Pines
About this spot
Stretching approximately 5 kilometers along the Karatsu Bay coastline with roughly one million black pines, this is one of Japan's three greatest pine forests. Legend has it that the first lord of Karatsu Domain, Terazawa Hirotaka, had it planted as a windbreak and tidal barrier. It is also designated as a National Special Scenic Site. Walking the path through the pine forest, dappled sunlight filters through the pine branches overhead, and the fragrance of sea salt mingles with the scent of pine in a most pleasant way. This pine forest also preserves legends of 'seven mysteries,' adding a layer of narrative richness. It would be a shame to merely drive through; this is definitely a green tunnel meant to be walked.
Tips
The path through the forest is flat and easy to walk, though you may encounter pine cones and fallen branches underfoot, so sneakers are advisable. Insects may appear among the trees, so insect repellent is helpful for comfort. The road along the prefecture's highway has traffic, so when walking, stay to the edge of the road and prioritize safety.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour. Mid-afternoon dappled sunlight illuminates the tree-lined path most beautifully.
