A Grand Panorama Overlooking the Pine Forest and Karatsu Bay from 284 Meters

About this spot

An observation platform at the summit of Kagami Yama (鏡山) at 284 meters elevation, one of Saga Prefecture's most spectacular scenic spots overlooking Niji no Matsubara and Karatsu Bay. Below spreads a green ribbon traced by approximately one million black pines arcing along the coastline, beyond which lie the Karatsu townscape and Karatsu Castle—and on clear days, even the island silhouettes of the Genkai Nada (玄界灘) are visible. Kagami Yama is the legendary stage where Matsura Sayohime waved her scarf in farewell, and it is also known by the alternative name 'Hikiromushii Yama' (領巾振山). The summit is accessible by car and is famous as a spot for cherry blossoms and azaleas. This grand panorama—as if viewing the entire day's itinerary from above—is a fitting finale for this course.

Tips

The summit is reached by a series of hairpin-turn roads; drive carefully and slowly. The observation platform juts out into space for exceptional views, but those uncomfortable with heights can still enjoy plenty of scenery from the approaches. In the evening light, Karatsu Bay glimmers beautifully—if time allows, it's worth lingering for photography.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 hour 20 minutes. Late afternoon when the western sun makes Karatsu Bay shimmer is the best time for photography.
