Spectacles Bridge (Megane Bashi), an Important Cultural Property Reflecting Twin Arches in the Pond
About this spot
A park spreading across the ruins of Takajo, a small elevated castle site in central Isahaya City. The main attraction is the Spectacles Bridge (Megane Bashi), the first stone bridge in Japan to be designated as an Important Cultural Property. Originally spanning the Hommei River, this precious bridge was relocated to the park's pond after a major flood to preserve it for future generations. When the twin arches reflect in the water's surface, the two circles appear just like eyeglasses. You can actually walk across the stone bridge, and viewing the sturdy stonework up close fills you with admiration for the stone artisans' skill. The hill is enveloped in the greenery of azaleas and camphor trees, making for a leisurely stroll with the bridge.
Tips
The park and Spectacles Bridge are free to view. For the best full view of the bridge and its water reflection, photograph from the front side of the pond. If you climb to the Takajo ruins at the top of the hill, you can overlook the Isahaya streetscape, but it involves stone steps, so wear comfortable shoes. Since the area is in an urban setting, check parking locations in advance for smooth access.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 1 hour. On a calm, windless day, the reflected eyeglasses shape becomes perfectly crisp.
