Follow Doppo's Path and View Saiki Bay from Atop the Stone Walls
About this spot
The ruins of the castle seat of the Mori clan, built atop Castle Mountain (approximately 144 meters elevation) that overlooks the castle town of Saiki. Although buildings such as the main keep have been lost, well-preserved Edo-period stone walls remain at the summit, and the moss-covered stone work conveys the dignified character of a mountain castle. Several routes lead to the castle, and among them, the "Doppo's Path" (独歩碑の道), named after the young Kunikidata Doppo's contemplative walks, is cherished as a gentle mountain trail winding through the trees. Standing atop the stone walls, the castle town's gridlike layout spreads below, and beyond it the silhouettes of islands in Saiki Bay and the Bungo Channel await—an exhilarating panorama of the entire seaside town.
Tips
The hike to the summit takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes uphill. Stone steps and mountain paths continue, so comfortable sneakers and water are essential. In summer, insect repellent enhances comfort. The San-no-Maru Yagura Gate near the foot of the mountain retains castle features, making it a worthwhile stop after descending.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour 15 minutes total. The morning when the air is clear offers the best sea views from the summit.
