Ruins of Japan's Largest Private Academy Founded by Hirose Tanso

The ruins of a private academy founded by Hirose Tanso, an Edo-period Confucian scholar and educator, in his hometown of Hita. 'Kangi' means 'all are welcome.' At the time of enrollment, the academy embraced the 'Santsuho' (Three Negations) principle, which disregarded age, educational background, and social status, providing equal education where everyone began from the same starting point. Attracted by its reputation, students from across the nation gathered, making it one of Japan's largest private academies in the Edo period. Notable figures such as the Dutch scholar Takano Choei and military leader Omura Masujiro studied here and went on to shape their era. The grounds retain buildings associated with Tanso, including the Shufuan cottage and the Enshi Tower, and the site is designated as a National Historic Site and recognized as part of Japan's Heritage as part of 'Early Modern Educational Heritage Sites in Japan.' This is a place where you can touch the origins of learning nurtured by the Tenryō town.
Tips
Admission is free. It's best to first view the exhibits at the adjacent Kangiien Educational Research Center before walking through the grounds—this will deepen your understanding of Tanso's teachings considerably. Since Mameda Town is within walking distance, it's recommended to park your car in the nearby parking lot and switch to exploring on foot.
Best time to visit
Approximately 45 minutes. If you visit in the early morning when there are fewer visitors, you can savor the quiet atmosphere of this historic academy at leisure.
