About this spot

The former castle of the Itō clan, lords of the Obi domain, and a symbol of the castle town of Obi (飫肥), known as 'Kyushu's Little Kyoto.' Passing through the Ōte Gate (大手門), restored in Obi cedar, you'll find layers of moss-covered stone walls and a hushed, misty atmosphere. In the former main bailey spreads a tall stand of Obi cedars, and this tranquil space filtered by dappled sunlight is popular as a power spot. The landscape woven by stone walls and cedar groves is photogenic from any angle, evoking a dignified spirit that befits the beginning of a castle town stroll.

Tips

The castle grounds have many stone steps and gravel paths, so wear comfortable walking shoes. In the morning, there are few tourists, allowing you to enjoy the quiet cedar forest atmosphere in solitude. If visiting multiple paid facilities in the castle town, check at the ticket window if a combination ticket for multiple sites is available—it's a good value.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 hour. The morning light filtering through the cedar groves is most refreshing in the late morning.
