Nishi-Oyama Station (西大山駅)

Flow of the course

About this spot

A small unstaffed station on the Ibusuki-Makurazaki Line, known and loved as JR's southernmost station in Japan. Standing on the platform, Mt. Kaimon (開聞岳), called Satsuma Fuji, spreads its elegant skirt beyond the fields, and the view, framed by nothing but a single railway track and the mountain, captures the very essence of travel. In front of the station stands a yellow post box said to deliver happiness, and travelers can be seen mailing letters from here. The station shop nearby also offers a certificate commemorating your arrival at the southernmost station, making it a perfect memento of the trip. If the timing is right, you might even catch a special shot of a single-car train passing with Mt. Kaimon in the background.

Tips

As this is an unstaffed station, visits are free, but train services are infrequent, and entering the tracks or level crossing is strictly prohibited. Most visitors come by car and can easily enjoy the platform view from the parking space in front of the station. Those who want to photograph the train together with Mt. Kaimon should check the train schedule in advance.

Best time to visit

About 30 minutes. Mornings are recommended, when Mt. Kaimon stands out clearly in the crisp morning air
