A small unmanned station on the Ibusuki-Makurazaki Line, known as a popular stop as "JR Japan's southernmost station." Standing on the platform, beyond the spreading fields rises Kirishima-take (開聞岳), called "Satsuma Fuji," with its graceful slopes, and the view of just a single rail line and mountain filling your vision embodies the very essence of travel. In front of the station stands a cheerful yellow mailbox said to "deliver happiness," and you can often see travelers mailing letters from this spot. The small shop near the station sells certificates commemorating your visit to Japan's southernmost station, perfect for travel memories. With good timing, you can capture a special shot of a single-car train and Kirishima-take together.
Tips
As an unmanned station, viewing is free, but trains run infrequently and entry onto the tracks or crossing is strictly forbidden. Most visitors arrive by car and can easily enjoy the platform view from the parking space in front of the station. For those wanting to photograph the train with Kirishima-take, checking the train schedule in advance is essential.
