About this spot

A cape jutting out at the southernmost tip of the Satsuma Peninsula, crowned with a white lighthouse, and offering, when you look west, a graceful view of Mt. Kaimon (開聞岳) across the sea, one of Ibusuki's finest scenic spots. This is said to be the place from which Urashima Taro set off for the Dragon Palace, and along the approach stands Ryugu Shrine (龍宮神社), dedicated to Princess Otohime. It is also known for its unique style of worship, in which visitors write wishes on seashells and offer them at the shrine. The nearby beach is known as a nesting site for sea turtles, quietly lending a touch of reality to the legend. Pass through the approach lined with souvenir shops, and walk the rocky promenade to the lighthouse, where the open sea stretches out below. A stroll along the cape in the sea breeze is truly refreshing.

Tips

The promenade to the lighthouse is quite rocky, so comfortable walking shoes are a must. On windy days, be careful that your hat doesn't blow away in the strong sea breeze. The shops along the approach offer plenty of tempting snacks, but it's best to hold back a little to save room for lunch at Tosenkyo.
