White Lighthouse and Kirishima-take: The Cape of Urashima Taro Legend

A cape jutting out at the southernmost tip of Satsuma Peninsula, crowned with a pristine white lighthouse, offering Ibusuki's finest scenic view with Kirishima-take (開聞岳) displaying its elegant form across the sea to the west. This is the legendary departure point of Urashima Taro to the Dragon Palace, and along the path stands Ryugu Shrine (龍宮神社), dedicated to the Dragon King's daughter. A unique pilgrimage practice involves writing wishes on shells and offering them at the shrine. The nearby beach is known as a nesting ground for sea turtles, adding subtle reality to the legend. Walking along the path past souvenir shops and onto the rocky coastal trail to the lighthouse reveals a vast ocean below. The cape walk, swept by sea breezes, is refreshingly exhilarating.
Tips
The coastal trail to the lighthouse has many rocky sections, so comfortable walking shoes are essential. On windy days, hold onto your hat as it can easily blow away. The path has many tempting food stalls, but it's recommended to restrain yourself in anticipation of lunch at Karasenbori.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 1 hour. The morning when the air is clear offers the best views of Kirishima-take across the sea.
