About this spot

A rare sand steam bath landmark standing on the beach of Surigahama (摺ヶ浜), Ibusuki's hot spring district. Steam rises here and there from the sand along the water's edge, and the sight of people strolling by in yukata is a scene unique to this hot spring town of Ibusuki. From the beach in front of the hall, the Osumi Peninsula stretches out across Kinko Bay, and the sound of the waves rolling in and out echoes gently as a fitting close to the day. A promenade well-suited for strolling runs along the coast, and a seaside walk where the sea breeze carries a faint scent of hot spring steam is the perfect way to savor the lingering mood after touring the southernmost tip. Take in the distinctly Ibusuki atmosphere woven from steam, sea, and sand with all your senses, and bring the day to a relaxed close.

Tips

The glare off the sea can be strong, so a hat is reassuring. The sand is difficult to walk on, so sneakers are a safer choice than sandals. Souvenir shops and eateries are scattered throughout the surrounding hot spring district, and it's also enjoyable to stroll the streets while taking in the view of the rising steam. It's a good idea to look for Ibusuki souvenirs near the station before heading home.
