History Museum Perfect for Preparing Your Samurai Residence Tour

About this spot

A guidance facility at the entrance to the Izumi Foothill Samurai Residences, and a must-visit preview spot before your town walk. The Satsuma Domain stationed outposts called jokaku (outer castles) throughout its territory, where warrior groups were stationed to govern and defend the regions. Izumi Foothill boasted the largest scale among these outer castles, and the museum uses models and materials to clearly present the origins of the town's layout, the daily lives of samurai, and the spirit of the Izumi soldiers, known for their practical and resolute character. A combination ticket with the public samurai residences—the Takesoezoe and Saisho residences—is available here at a good value. Once you have the historical background in mind, as you step out into the alleys, each stone wall and samurai gate will begin to tell its own story.

Tips

A combination ticket that includes the public samurai residences (Takesoezoe and Saisho residences) is a great value, and it's recommended to purchase it all here at once. There is a well-maintained parking lot, so you can park your car and head directly into the samurai residences on foot. Getting an overview from the museum's guide map before you start walking will make your tour smooth.

Best time to visit

Approximately 40 minutes. Finish your preview right after the museum opens, then head into the town walk during the cool morning hours—this is ideal.
