Hunting for Satsuma Confections at Akashiya Honten, Originator of Karukan
About this spot
A long-established shop renowned as the originator of karukan, a representative confection of Satsuma. Karukan is made by grating natural yam, combining it with rice flour and sugar, and steaming it—the result is pure white, fluffy, and moist with refined sweetness. Karukan manju (buns) filled with red bean paste are also popular and available in a wide range from gift-giving to personal consumption. Located near the arcade street, the main shop has a serene atmosphere, with seasonal fresh confections also displayed inside—a delight to simply browse. At the start of your food walk, be sure to secure a piece representing Satsuma's confectionery culture.
Tips
Karukan is a steamed confection with a relatively short shelf life, so check the expiration date when purchasing as a souvenir. If you'd rather not carry extra luggage, shops are also located around Tenmonkan and the station, making it convenient to buy in bulk on your way back. The morning, right after opening, is a calm time to leisurely select items.
Best time to visit
Approximately 45 minutes. The store is quiet and peaceful right after opening, making it easy to take your time selecting items.
