Strolling Through Arcades at Centerras Tenmonkan, Tenmonkan's New Landmark
About this spot
A complex facility standing in Senjitsu-cho, Tenmonkan, bringing together shops, dining establishments, and even a library—a new landmark for the city. Lower floors feature stores dealing in Kagoshima food and sundries, perfect for scoping out souvenirs. The library inside has an open, welcoming atmosphere where travelers can readily drop by, making it enjoyable to browse bookshelves related to Kagoshima. Stretching right in front of the complex is the Tenmonkan arcade, the most prosperous shopping district in southern Kyushu, where you can walk without getting wet even on rainy days. Learning that the place name Tenmonkan derives from "Meijikan," the Satsuma clan's facility for celestial observations, will deepen your appreciation of the street walk.
Tips
The interior and arcade streets are almost continuously roofed, allowing you to walk without worrying about weather—Tenmonkan's greatest strength. The library floor is meant for quiet activities, so keep conversation to a minimum. Ajimori, popular at lunch, will certainly have a line, so it's best to finish up here with time to spare.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour. The mid-morning time slot makes both the complex and arcade relatively uncrowded and easy to navigate.
