Mini-Trekking Through a Forest of Bizarre Rock Formations from 200 Million Years Ago

A rare subtropical karst landscape worldwide, where 200-million-year-old limestone has been eroded by rainwater over long periods, creating countless sharp, bizarre rock formations that stand prominently. This corresponds to Asu Forest (Ashumui), a sacred site appearing in Ryukyuan creation mythology, and has long been cherished as a place of prayer. The park features several well-maintained hiking courses, and as you weave between massive boulders, you are overwhelmed by the natural sculpted beauty. From the observation deck, you can see Hedo Cape and the deep blue sea at a glance, and on the forest course shaded by gajumaru trees, you can enjoy subtropical plant observation. Barrier-free courses are also available, allowing the whole family to experience the world of bizarre rocks.
Tips
A shuttle bus transports visitors from the reception area to the trailhead. While the course is maintained, the rocky terrain is uneven, so comfortable shoes and drinks are essential. In seasons with strong sunlight, don't forget a hat. If time permits, you can enjoy combining multiple courses.
Best time to visit
Approximately 2 hours. Trekking in the morning before the sun becomes strong is most comfortable.
