Ancient Alleyways Guided by Ryukyuan Limestone Slopes and the Great Akagi Tree

A stone-paved slope laid with Ryukyuan limestone, developed as part of the official road Madam-michi (真珠道) that once connected Shuri Castle to Naha Harbor. This beautiful alley was selected as one of Japan's 100 Scenic Routes. The landscape of successive stone walls and red-tiled residences perfectly captures the essence of the ancient capital, Shuri. In the grounds of Uchikinjō-dake along the way towers the great Akagi tree, with an estimated age exceeding 200 years, and standing beneath the dappled sunlight creates a sense of sacred atmosphere. There are also rest areas along the slope where travelers can sit and take in the view of Naha city from beneath the red tiles. Each stone worn smooth and rounded by time bears the marks of centuries of people passing through since the royal dynasty era.

Tips

The slope is quite steep and stones become slippery after rain, making sturdy walking shoes essential. Walking downhill from the Shuri Castle side is physically easier. Remember that this is also a living residential street, so maintain quiet and respectful behavior when exploring.
