Ibi-Nagara Dividing Levee (揖斐・長良川の背割提)

Flow of the course

About this spot

The Ibi River (揖斐川) and Nagara River (長良川) flow parallel to each other on either side of this dividing levee, joining into one in Kuwana City before emptying into Ise Bay (伊勢湾). The levee was built during Meiji-era river improvement works to separate the Kiso Three Rivers (木曽三川), which once flowed together as a single tangled channel. Atop the levee, flanked by the two great rivers, the evening breeze off the water stays pleasant even on a summer evening, and as the sun sinks, the river's surface shifts from orange to indigo. Even before the fireworks go up, the wait for the Kuwana Suigo Fireworks Festival (桑名水郷花火大会) to begin is already a beautiful time in itself.

Tips

About 20 minutes on foot from Kintetsu/JR Kuwana Station (近鉄・JR桑名駅), or a bicycle or taxi is convenient. On the day of the fireworks festival, nearby parking lots fill up early, so using public transportation is strongly recommended. The earlier you stake out a spot, the better your position along the river. Check the location of restrooms ahead of time.

Best time to visit

About 2 hours 20 minutes. The changing colors of the river's surface around sunset make this the quietest and most beautiful time of the day
