Obihiro Zoo (おびひろ動物園)

Flow of the course

About this spot

A municipal zoo of Obihiro city adjacent to Midoriyama Park. Meet animals unique to Hokkaido such as Ezo deer (エゾシカ) and Ezo raccoon dogs (エゾタヌキ), as well as diverse species including Amur tigers and polar bears. Though compact, attractions are well-concentrated, and the scale allows for a comfortable pace when visiting with children. Spending an afternoon beneath Tokachi's expansive sky calmly observing animals before the night's climax makes for an enjoyable buildup to the fireworks. The outdoor areas are predominant, so on sunny days, remember to bring a hat and stay hydrated.

Tips

Just a short walk from Midoriyama Park. Admission is a few hundred yen for adults (please check in advance). During summer, the zoo closes around 5:00 PM, so plan to wrap up by around 3:00 PM to allow time for your next activity. The zoo has a gift shop and vending machines, serving as a hydration stop.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 hour 30 minutes required. Mid-afternoon hours coincide with active animal behavior, providing many delightful scenes for children.
