A grand Shingon Buddhist temple founded by the monk Kakuban in the late Heian period, which served as the headquarters of the Negoro clan during the Muromachi and Sengoku periods, wielding significant power. The temple grounds contain numerous structures designated as important cultural properties, including the National Treasure multi-tiered pagoda (Tahoto). The vermillion-painted halls standing amid the cedar groves create a scene of distinctive tranquility and grandeur. The Tahoto pagoda, standing approximately 40 meters tall, is said to be Japan's largest multi-tiered pagoda. Even in midsummer, the shade within the temple grounds offers cool respite, making it an ideal place to spend peaceful hours in this historic space before the excitement of the fireworks festival. Since the grounds are extensive, take your time exploring without rushing.
Tips
About 5 minutes by car from Michi-no-Eki Negoro History Hill. Admission is approximately 500 yen for adults (please confirm current rates on site as prices may vary). The grounds are large and uneven, so wear comfortable walking shoes. Don't forget insect repellent. There are gift shops and rest areas within the temple grounds.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour 30 minutes required. The afternoon hours with dappled sunlight filtering through the trees offer the most pleasant atmosphere for leisurely exploring the serene temple grounds.
