Pay respects at a weighty ancient temple, the stage of Japan's eccentric "Hadaka Matsuri" festival
About this spot
An ancient temple of the Koyasan Shingon sect said to have been founded in the 8th century, which became the origin of the place name "Nishi-Daiji." The "Nishi-Daiji Kaiyō (Hadaka Matsuri)" held every February is designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan and is known nationwide. Once you pass through the Nio Gate, the spacious grounds are lined with a main hall and a multi-tiered pagoda, with the weight of long history hovering in the air. Admission to the temple is free, and simply walking slowly through the grounds offers plenty to see. Before tonight's fireworks, experiencing the history and serenity of this place will add depth to the story of your full day.
