About this spot

This observatory sits at the summit of Mount Ryuo (竜王山), part of the Setonaikai National Park (瀬戸内海国立公園). Located southwest of Mount Fudekage (筆影山), it offers views of the Seto Inland Sea (瀬戸内海) dotted with the islands of the Geiyo Islands (芸予諸島). On clear days, you can see as far as the Shikoku Mountains (四国山地) and up to 7 of the 10 bridges of the Shimanami Kaido (しまなみ海道). The observatory is equipped with telescopes, letting you draw the islands closer for a detailed view. This is a place worth visiting during the day to enjoy the scenery from up high before the night's fireworks.

Tips

A few minutes by car from Michi-no-Eki Hongo (道の駅本郷). The walking path has ups and downs, so wear comfortable shoes. It is reassuring to bring drinking water from the roadside station or prepare it before departure. On the way back, check your route in advance, whether heading toward Hongo Sports Park (本郷運動公園) or straight to the Numata River (沼田川).

Best time to visit

About 1 hour 30 minutes. On sunny afternoons, it is recommended to spend time on the shaded parts of the walking path.
