About this spot

Built in 1882 (Meiji 15), this building is designated a National Important Cultural Property as the oldest surviving elementary school building in Shikoku. Its striking blend of Japanese and Western style features arched windows fitted with German-made glass, conveying the enthusiasm people in the Meiji era brought to local education. Inside, it now serves as an educational archive, displaying pre-war textbooks and school administration records. The surrounding townscape of Unomachi is designated an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings, making it a pleasant area to stroll through as well.

Tips

Located near the Shiroyama trailhead for Uwajima Castle, making it an easy stop on your way back from the castle. About 15 minutes on foot from Uwajima Station. Check opening hours and closed days in advance. The Uwajima City Date Museum is also nearby, worth visiting together if you enjoy history.
