Kongozan Bannaoji Temple (金剛山鑁阿寺)

Flow of the course

About this spot

A Shingon Buddhist temple built on the ruins of the Ashikaga clan's mansion, with the grounds designated as a National Historic Site and the Main Hall as a National Treasure. The grounds, surrounded by water moats and earthen ramparts on all sides, are a rare space that preserves vestiges of a medieval samurai residence. After crossing the arched bridge and passing through the two-story gate, you're greeted by a great ginkgo tree said to be over 650 years old. The grounds are free to visit and spacious enough for small children to roam about freely. Just a short walk from Ashikaga School, this site is a beloved standard pairing course in the local area.

Tips

About 3 minutes walk from Ashikaga School. Ground visitation is free (Treasury Museum requires separate admission). Main Hall viewing is primarily external. The great ginkgo tree in the grounds offers beautiful greenery in summer. Conveniently located on the return route toward Tobu Ashikaga City Station.

Best time to visit

Approximately 50 minutes required. The shade early afternoon is cool, and the ginkgo tree's greenery appears vibrant at this hour.
