About this spot

This park spreads across about 72 hectares in central Mito, made up of Lake Senba (千波湖) and the green space around it, and is adjacent to Kairakuen (偕楽園). The approximately 3km path circling the lake is popular as a jogging course, and a statue of Tokugawa Mitsukuni (徳川光圀) stands on the west side of the lakeshore. During the Mito Komon Festival (水戸黄門まつり), food stalls are also set up, wrapping the park in festival excitement different from its daytime atmosphere. The time when the lake surface changes from a reddish-orange to a deep blue at dusk is beautiful, and it is reassuring to spread out your sheet more than an hour before the show starts.

Tips

About 15-20 minutes by bus or on foot from the south exit of Mito Station. On the evening of the fireworks display, roads around the lakeshore become congested, so using public transportation is recommended. Check the location of restrooms early. If you want to pick up extra snacks or drinks from the food stalls, going a little earlier rather than right before the show starts means shorter lines.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour 10 minutes. You can wait for the show to start while enjoying the changing colors of the lake surface at dusk.
