About this spot

Located in the southern part of Takamatsu, this feudal-lord garden is designated a National Special Place of Scenic Beauty and has earned three stars in the Michelin Green Guide, making it one of Kagawa's premier attractions. The strolling-style garden, with six ponds and thirteen artificial hills skillfully arranged, is masterfully designed so the scenery changes completely depending on where you walk. The combination of well-tended pine trees and quiet ponds is beautiful in every season, and in summer's vivid greenery, the shaded paths make for a cool walk. A traditional wooden boat ride (和船遊覧, paid) on the southern lake is also popular, offering an exceptional view of the garden from the water. Spend some relaxed time in this quiet garden before the bustle of the fireworks begins.

Tips

About 15-20 minutes from Takamatsu Station by Kotoden railway or local bus; the nearest stops are Kotoden Ritsurin-koen Station or Ritsurin-koen Kitaguchi Station. Admission is 420 yen for adults. The grounds are large, so wear comfortable walking shoes. The boat ride requires a separate fee and may operate on a numbered-ticket system. Plan to leave the garden around 5 PM to allow travel time back toward Sunport.

Best time to visit

About 2 hours. The pond surfaces sparkling in the afternoon sunlight filtering through the trees is especially beautiful
