The inner sanctuary of Daijin Mountain Shrine, which reveres Daisen itself as its sacred body, is an ancient shrine boasting one of Japan's largest Gongenyatsuri-style main halls. The main attraction is the approximately 700-meter natural stone-paved approach trail, said to be Japan's longest. As you ascend the stone path winding through cedar groves, a rare "backward-facing gate" (facing away from the shrine) appears, beyond which the solemn main hall reveals itself. The interior's stunning white sandalwood lacquer work is equally impressive, and the sanctuary grounds enveloped in mountain spirituality seem to purify your heart simply by walking through them. This is the holiest site on the course, where you can physically sense the depth of Daisen's mountain worship tradition.
Tips
The stone path becomes slippery after rain, so sturdy footwear is essential. The approach continues uphill, so take your time and allow ample time. Even in summer, the shade beneath the cedar groves provides a cool and refreshing walk.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour 15 minutes required. The mid-morning approach trail has few visitors, allowing you to walk the dappled stone path quietly.
