About this spot

Yonago Castle Ruins is a castle park at the northern edge of downtown Yonago, on Minatoyama Hill (湊山), which rises about 90 meters. The remains of this early-modern castle, built in the early 1600s, are well preserved along with their stone walls and have been designated a National Historic Site. Climbing to the keep platform reveals a 360-degree panorama below: Lake Nakaumi and the long, slender silhouette of the Yumigahama Peninsula, and on clear days, the majestic form of Mt. Daisen (大山) in the distance. You can also spot the Yonago Port quay below, where tonight's fireworks will launch, so getting a sense of the venue's location during the day will make things easier at night. The walking path along the stone walls is well maintained, making it easy for families to stroll through at a leisurely pace.

Tips

About a 15-minute walk from JR Yonago Station, or convenient by bicycle or taxi from in front of the station. Admission is free. The path up to the keep platform has some steep stone steps, so wear comfortable walking shoes. Summer afternoons bring strong sunlight, so bring water and a hat. After descending, you can head straight to the adjacent Minatoyama Park.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour 15 minutes. Afternoon light makes the waters of Lake Nakaumi and Yumigahama sparkle beautifully.
