About this spot

The Sendai River (川内川), which this promenade follows, is a Class-A river roughly 137 kilometers long. It rises at Mt. Shiraga in Asagiri Town, Kumamoto Prefecture, flows through Kumamoto, Miyazaki, and Kagoshima prefectures, cuts through the Sendai Plain, and empties into the Satsuma Sea (薩摩灘). The fireworks festival takes place along this stretch of the Sendai River's riverbank, from Nishikaimon-cho (西開聞町) to Okoji-cho (大小路町). Walking along the river during the day lets you get a sense of tonight's viewing spot and the direction the fireworks will launch from. Take in the sparkle of the river's surface and imagine the excitement to come tonight.

Tips

About 15 minutes on foot from Satsumasendai Station (薩摩川内駅). The riverbank has little shade and strong sunlight, so don't forget sun protection and to stay hydrated. On the day of the fireworks, viewers start gathering from evening onward, so if you want a good spot, plan to come back sometime between 5 and 6 p.m.

About 1 hour. A good time to picture the daytime river flow overlapping with the nighttime fireworks venue.
