About this spot

This massive rock rising from the sea is beloved as a symbol of Makurazaki City, and can be viewed from near Hinokami Park. The sight of its steep, column-like form thrusting powerfully up from the water's surface is striking, making it one of the representative landscapes of the southern Satsuma coastline. Viewed from the shore where the waves break, Tategamiiwa Rock (立神岩) with the blue East China Sea spreading behind it also makes for a great photo. Since it can be reached on foot right after visiting Hinokami Park, it is recommended to enjoy it together with a stroll through the park. In summer, just before evening, when the sunlight softens, the color of the sea is especially beautiful.

Tips

Just a short walk from Hinokami Park, or a few minutes by car. Along the coast, sea spray can reach you at times, so watch your footing. Getting too close to the rocky area is dangerous, so please view it from a safe vantage point. From here, it is about a 10-15 minute drive to the area around Makurazaki Port.
