About this spot

An old temple in Kudoyama Town, long cherished as the place marking the entrance to the main pilgrimage route up to Mount Koya (高野山). It is part of a World Heritage site, and climbing the stone steps in the precincts leads you on to the adjoining Niu Kanshofu Shrine (丹生官省符神社). It is also known for a faith connected with the wishes of women, and the distinctive votive plaques dedicated here catch the eye. The precincts, surrounded by trees, stay cool even on a summer morning, and simply walking here settles the mind. Starting the day by standing at the beginning of the road to Mount Koya gives you a glimpse of how this land came to be.

Tips

Please check visiting information in advance through official sources. There are stone steps, so comfortable walking shoes are safest; leaving the stroller below and using a baby carrier makes moving around easier. Please visit the precincts quietly. The walk from the car park is short, so it is no burden even with small children.

Best time to visit

About 50 minutes. First thing in the morning, when the air is clear, is the most comfortable.
