On a hill in Tamashima, Kurashiki City, stand Entsuji Temple, known as the place where Ryokan (良寛) trained in his youth, and the park laid out around it. Pines and large rocks are scattered through the grounds, and as you climb the stone steps, gaps between the trees reveal the Seto Inland Sea and the townscape of Tamashima below. Even children with no interest in history can enjoy the place physically, walking between the rocks or searching for views from high ground. There is plenty of shade, which helps on a summer morning. Take a first look with your own eyes at the kind of terrain the town of Tamashima spreads across.
Tips
There are stone steps and slopes, so wear comfortable walking shoes. The grounds are a place of worship, so a word beforehand about not running around keeps things smooth. Some spots with good views have steep slopes just beyond the railings, so do not take your eyes off small children. Vending machines are limited, so bringing your own drinks is recommended.
Best time to visit
About 1 hour 15 minutes. On clear mornings you can see all the way out to the sea
