Kitamae Ship Heritage Museum

Flow of the course

About this spot

This museum is located in the Hashidate district, known as the home of the Kitamae Ship era, which prospered in Japan Sea maritime transport from the Edo to Meiji period. Housed in a former mansion of a Kitamae Ship owner, it conveys the prosperity of that time through exhibitions of shipowners' lifestyles, ship models, and precious maritime tools. The townscape of Hashidate itself is designated as a National Important Traditional Wooden Building Preservation District. Even before and after visiting the museum, simply walking through the stone-paved alleyways allows you to feel the remnants of the former port town that prospered through Kitamae Ship trade. Learning about the origins of this district before swimming will make your exploration even more enjoyable.

Tips

About 5 minutes by car from Hashidate Beach. The museum has many tatami-floored rooms, so small children can comfortably visit without shoes. In summer, the midday sun is strong, so remember hats and hydration for outdoor townscape walks.

Best time to visit

Takes about 1 hour. Early morning after opening is less crowded and allows for leisurely viewing.
