Komyoji Temple (天照山 蓮華院 光明寺)

Flow of the course

About this spot

The head temple of the Pure Land sect, it greets visitors with one of Kamakura's largest wooden temple gates. Despite being within walking distance of Zaimokuza Beach, the spacious grounds have a calm atmosphere different from the tourist-crowded center. In summer, lotus flowers often bloom here, and the verdant grounds are perfect for a moment of respite. After prayer, grab lunch in the surrounding area and head to the sea.

Tips

From Tsurugaoka Hachimangu, taking a bus or walking/cycling is convenient. The grounds are spacious with plenty of shade, making it suitable for rest during hot times. Using restaurants in the Zaimokuza/Wada-zuka area for lunch makes the move to the beach smooth.

Best time to visit

About 45 minutes. The grounds are relatively quiet and pleasant around midday.
