About this spot

About 10 minutes by car from Kikudzuka Beach, scattered throughout the farmland of Kikudzuka Town in Nikaho City are remnants of "Kyujukushima"—small islands that once floated in an inlet of the Sea of Japan. Even after a 1804 earthquake lifted them above the sea, small pine-topped hills remaining among the rice paddies create a unique landscape that was once acclaimed alongside the Matsushima islands of eastern Japan. Walking farm paths while viewing these hills is perfect for a cool summer morning. From the observation platform, you can see a panorama of the hills, building anticipation for the sea ahead.

Tips

You'll walk farm paths from the parking area to tour the hills. Fields may be muddy, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Insect repellent spray is helpful in summer.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 hour. Recommended before temperatures rise in the morning.
