Quiet moment at an ancient temple with ties to Matsuo Bashō

About this spot

An ancient Sōtō Zen temple standing on the shores of Kyujukushima, known for being visited by haiku poet Matsuo Bashō, who composed verses during his journey along "The Narrow Road to the Deep North." Legend tells that the inlet once extended to the temple grounds themselves, and worshippers would arrive by boat. Surrounded by trees, the quiet grounds remain cool even in summer; a slow walk down the approach path becomes a peaceful moment to pray for safe travels. Feeling Kikudzuka's nature and history, center yourself before the afternoon swimming.
