Vermillion Torii Gate Facing the Lake: Prayers for Beauty and Love

A shrine dedicated to Princess Tatsuko, located on the northern shore of Lake Tazawa. The striking sight of vermillion torii gates facing the lake is the shrine's signature feature, and the contrast between the lapis-blue waters and the bright vermillion is recognized as one of Lake Tazawa's finest scenes. The shrine's name originates from a rock where Akita domain lord Yoshitaka Satake is said to have sat and admired the lake in 1661. Drawing on the blessings of Tatsuko, who became a goddess of beauty, visitors come seeking good fortune in beauty, love, and relationships. Scattered throughout the grounds are legendary sites including the "Seven-Color Tree," said to have seven different types of wood growing from a single trunk, and the "Sacred Spring of Katahashira," which Princess Tatsuko is said to have drunk from. Praying here as a couple or pair creates the perfect commemoration of a romantic drive date.
Tips
About 10 minutes by car from the Tatsuko Statue along the lakeside road; parking is available near the torii gates. At the shrine office, you can receive beauty amulets and temple stamps—don't forget your stamp book. The classic photo composition captures the torii gate and lake by shooting from the lake side toward the shrine. The lakeside rocks can be slippery, so watch your footing carefully.
Best time to visit
Approximately 50 minutes. During daylight hours, the lake's blue deepens and the contrast with the vermillion torii gate is most vivid.
