About this spot

This mountain pass is known as one of the most beautiful stretches of the Ise-ji route of the Kumano Kodo, a UNESCO World Heritage pilgrimage road. The Edo-period stone paving remains well preserved, and the path through the dense cedar forest stays cool even in summer. Even just walking the area near the trailhead is enough to fully sense the atmosphere of the old pilgrimage road, and it's an easy enough distance for a light family hike. Partway along the trail, there are spots where the view opens up over Owase Bay, letting you enjoy the essence of a Kumano Kodo walk without much effort.

Tips

The trailhead is about a 15-minute drive from Kii-Nagashima Manbo Roadside Station. Walking the entire route takes over an hour and a half one way, so it's a good idea to turn back partway depending on your schedule. The stone paving can be slippery in rain, so wear shoes suited for walking.

Best time to visit

About 2 hours. Early afternoon is pleasant, with comfortable dappled sunlight filtering through the trees
