About this spot

This shrine sits partway up a mountain and is known for a nationally rare sight: hundreds of stone Buddha and stone deity statues lining the approach and the shrine grounds. The many simple, expressive stone statues speak to a history of local faith dating back to the Edo period. Walking the quiet mountain path surrounded by trees, taking in the statues one by one, is filled with a curious charm unique to this rural setting. Exploring with children, looking for statues with different expressions, is also an enjoyable way to spend the time.

Tips

About a 15-minute drive from Sashikirikyo Gorge (差切峡). Comfortable walking shoes are essential, as you'll walk a mountain path to reach the shrine grounds. The stone statues are scattered throughout the natural surroundings, so visit with plenty of time to spare.
