This is a three-story wooden former inn from the Meiji era, standing facing north in front of Koyaguchi Station (高野口駅) on the JR Wagayama Line. Built to house travelers when Koyaguchi thrived as the gateway to pilgrimages to Mt. Koya (高野山), it features an irimoya-style tiled roof layered with chidori and kara gables, with glass doors covering the second- and third-floor facades. Registered as a national tangible cultural property in 2001, it is now used as ‘Cafe Katsuragikan (cafe葛城館)’ in essentially its original form. Its photogenic exterior is also great for family keepsake photos, letting you spend a moment tracing Hashimoto's history.
Tips
Right in front of Koyaguchi Station (高野口駅) on the JR Wagayama Line. As the building is an operating cafe, please be considerate of the shop when visiting or taking photos. Old-fashioned shops also remain around the station.
Best time to visit
About 1 hour needed. Afternoon light brings out the warmth of the wooden architecture.
