Sakamoto, which flourished as the temple town of Enryaku-ji on Mt. Hiei, still retains many stone walls known as 'Anota-zumi,' skillfully built from natural stones. Designated an Important Preservation District for Groups of Historic Buildings, the quiet streets lined with temple lodgings let you stroll as if stepping back in time. Photogenic spots are scattered throughout, including waterways running between the stone walls and alleys offering glimpses of lush gardens. This is an area families who enjoy historical walks will definitely want to explore on foot.
Tips
About a 10-minute walk from Hiyoshi Taisha. The alleys have many slopes, so wear comfortable walking shoes. In summer, some stretches have little shade, so remember to stay hydrated.
