Next stop: Rest your feet at a foot bath overlooking Lake Biwa and wait for the evening fireworksAbout this spot
This shrine sits on the shore of Lake Biwa, and the great pine tree towering within its grounds has long been depicted in waka poetry and paintings as 'Night Rain at Karasaki,' one of the Eight Views of Omi. The pine's branches spreading dramatically out over the lake are striking, and the view of Lake Biwa from the shrine grounds is also superb. A leisurely stroll along the lakeshore lets the breeze off the water refresh you and helps you forget the heat. Taking in the lake during the day, where the fireworks will launch tonight, makes it easier to picture the evening's viewing spot.
Tips
About a 10-minute drive from the Sakamoto area. Visiting the shrine grounds is free. There's little to block the sun along the lakeshore, so a hat is reassuring.
Best time to visit
About 1 hour 15 minutes. As evening approaches, the lake's surface grows calm and looks beautiful
