About this spot

The gateway to Susaki, located along National Route 56. Named after the Japanese river otter (the facility's motif) that was last confirmed in the pristine Shinjo River (新荘川) flowing through town, and featuring a merchandise corner for Shinjo-kun (しんじょう君), Susaki's local mascot character, this roadside station sets a festive travel mood. The retail corner is lined with freshly-caught fish and local vegetables. Susaki is also one of Japan's leading producers of myoga (Japanese ginger), and many visitors take home the fragrant condiment as a souvenir. Souvenirs related to the signature nabeyaki ramen are also available, so start your day here with a preview of what's to come. Fill your stomach with light food from the shop and prepare for the main event at lunch.

Tips

About 40 minutes by car from Kochi city center, with easy access right from the Susaki-Higashi IC on the Kochi Expressway. The parking lot is spacious and easy to use from early morning. Since nabeyaki ramen awaits at lunch, it's wise to keep your breakfast light.

Best time to visit

Allow about 45 minutes. Early morning after opening offers the most abundant selection of local vegetables and fresh fish.
