About this spot

An inn founded in the first year of the Genroku era (1688); its name comes from the lamp oil it once provided to travelers. It has its own hot-spring source welling up from beneath the building, and the Shokuyukan building is set aside for dining and day-trip bathing. As evening falls, festival lanterns begin to light up the Yubara Onsen hot-spring town ahead of the fireworks. After having dinner here, move to the banks of the Asahi River to secure a viewing spot. Dusk in the hot-spring town, with steam drifting through the air, has real charm, and waiting for the show to the sound of the river's gentle flow is a pleasant time.

Tips

About 5 minutes by car from Yubara Dam. Nights can turn cool even in summer, so it's reassuring to bring something to layer on.

Best time to visit

About 2 hours. The hot-spring steam and lantern light at dusk are full of atmosphere.
