Next stop: Photograph the Stunning View of Mt. Kaimon from Japan's Southernmost StationAbout this spot
Enshrined at the foot of Mt. Kaimon, this shrine has long been revered as the Ichinomiya (chief shrine) of Satsuma Province. The vermilion shrine buildings and lush green grounds are beautiful, and simply walking the approach brings a refreshing sense of calm. The view of Mt. Kaimon rising above the grounds is another highlight, offering a unique atmosphere where mountain and shrine feel like one. It's also a nice way to quietly sense, through your visit, the foothill land where tonight's fireworks will light up the sky.
Tips
About 10 minutes by car from Tosenkyo Somen Nagashi. Admission to the grounds is free. Summer daytime sun is strong, so don't forget a hat and something to drink.
Best time to visit
About 45 minutes. The afternoon light makes the shrine building's vermilion color especially vivid
