Municipal Tosenkyo Somen Nagashi (市営唐船峡そうめん流し)

Flow of the course

About this spot

A signature spot in Ibusuki, known as the birthplace of rotating flowing noodles (回転式そうめん流し), in which somen noodles spin around inside a tabletop basin of water. The clear spring water welling up in the lush green valley is refreshingly cold, creating a cool retreat even in the height of summer. Noodles are set afloat in the rotating basin fed by this spring water, and scooping up the swiftly circling somen with your chopsticks is a delight that captivates adults and children alike. Set meals typically come with salt-grilled trout, carp soup, and rice balls, and enjoying lunch while gazing at the trees of the valley is an especially delicious experience. A nice bonus of this spring-water town is that flowing noodles can be enjoyed here year-round.

Tips

Long lines are almost guaranteed during summer vacation and on weekend lunchtimes; arriving early is the safest bet during busy periods. Payment is by meal ticket, so having cash on hand makes things smoother. Since the valley stays cool in the shade, a light jacket is comfortable even in summer. Seats by the water can get your feet wet, so wear shoes that are easy to walk in.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour 20 minutes. Comfortable if you arrive early, around midday, before the lines get long
