National Route 229, which runs along the Kumaishi coastline and is commonly known as the 'Oiwake Soran Line', is known as a road offering a sweeping view of the Sea of Japan. As you drive along this road connecting the villages of Sekinai, Nezaki, and Ayukawa, you can enjoy the sea and sky changing color as evening approaches. Since this area doesn't have many restaurants, it's also nice to take your time and snack along the way.
Tips
There are few shops along the road, so it's reassuring to prepare drinks and snacks beforehand. There are also sections with many curves, so drive at a safe speed. Sunglasses can be helpful, as the setting sun can be glaring in the evening.
Best time to visit
About 1 hour. At dusk, the sea turns a deep reddish-orange, making it the most beautiful time of day.
