About this spot

This temple of the Jodo Shinshu Hongwanji-ha school stands on Maeyama hill in Yatsuo. In 1326, it received the temple name ‘Monmyoji’ from Kakunyo, the third head priest of Hongwanji, and in 1551 it moved to its present location. In 1636, the town of Yatsuo was established on the temple grounds, and the temple is said to have served as the very foundation from which the town grew. The current main hall was built in 1812. It's a place where you can learn how the hillside town that hosts Owara came to be, before you set off to explore it.

Tips

It's within walking distance of the Etchu-Yatsuo Tourist Hall. The grounds have stone steps, so wear comfortable walking shoes. Even at the end of summer, the sun can still be strong on some days, so it's a good idea to bring a hat and something to drink.

Best time to visit

About 45 minutes. The quieter afternoon hours are a relaxed time to look around.
