View the hot spring town from Maizuru Mountain, spring home of Human Shogi pageant

About this spot

This park atop Maizuru Mountain overlooks Tendo's cityscape and is famous as the venue for the annual "Human Shogi" spring festival, where actors in samurai armor move across an enormous board like living pieces. The park features the Kenkun Shrine, associated with Oda Nobunaga's military family, and an observation plaza with sweeping views of the hot spring town and Ou Mountains. Walking the wooded paths offers cool breezes and lush summer greenery.

2026年の天童夏まつりは8月8日から9日までの2日間、天童温泉篠田病院南十字路交差点からわくわくランド西側入口にかけての沿道を舞台に開催されます。会場沿道には屋台が立ち並び、夕方から夜にかけて多くの家族連れでにぎわいます。将棋の町として知られる天童ですが、この夏まつりでは温泉地らしいのんびりとした雰囲気の中に、夏祭りらしい活気が加わり、提灯の灯りとともに夜が更けていきます。今回のコースで訪ねる初日は、まつりが始まったばかりのフレッシュな雰囲気を味わえる日です。

Tips

会場周辺は夕方以降、車両の通行規制がかかることがあります。屋台での買い物用に小銭を用意しておくとスムーズです。夜は気温が下がりやすいので、薄手の羽織ものがあると安心です。
