About this spot

A historic facility that served as the domain school of the Tsuwano Domain (津和野藩), teaching a wide range of subjects including Confucian studies, martial arts, and medicine. Mori Ogai (森鴎外) is said to have studied at this domain school as well, and its sturdy, unadorned wooden architecture still carries the spirit of the education-focused Tsuwano Domain. Inside, remains of a kendo training hall and exhibits let you feel the castle town's character as a center of learning.

Tips

Within walking distance of the Former Residence of Mori Ogai (森鴎外旧宅). Admission fee required.

Best time to visit

About 45 minutes needed. The quiet afternoon hours allow for a relaxed visit.
