Awa Japanese Paper Traditional Industry Hall (阿波和紙伝統産業会館)

Flow of the course

About this spot

This museum showcases the tradition of Awa washi paper, said to have a history spanning over 1,300 years, and includes a workshop where you can actually try papermaking yourself. Swishing a wooden frame across the water's surface to scoop up fibers looks simple but is surprisingly deep, and the finished sheet of washi can be dried and taken home just as it is. The hall also displays historical washi products and colorful crafts made from washi paper, offering a place to appreciate the depth of this traditional industry.

Tips

Advance reservations are recommended for the papermaking experience. The session takes about 30 to 40 minutes. Since it takes time for the paper you make to dry, it is reassuring to check whether they can ship it to you later.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour 15 minutes. Afternoons tend to be relatively uncrowded, making for a smoother experience.
